I have had 3 Volvo's going back to 1986 and this is the best.
My 85 turbo wagon was a 5 speed and had over 200K miles on it when I donated it to a charity.
My 1986 740 GLE has 209K on it. My 17 year old son is now driving it.
It is a fantastic road car. The 780 is a special car.
In spite of the obvious design flaws ( the trunk, rear seat levers, etc..) it is a lot of fun to drive.... and it goes fast.

In ten years, I've never even seen another red 1991 Coupe, just one other Coupe, a blue one about ten years ago!
Am glad the 780 Bertone group is being resurrected.
We should do more, considering the plethora of clubs and websites for Alfa, Fiat X/9 etc.
Merchandising should bring in cash for upgrades etc.
One of the doors on the right hand side has small scrach thats about the only problem it has.
This car came with O.Z. racing wheels from the dealer.
Im missing one of the center caps due to a negligent mechanic.
This cap has a security screw and the volvo logo on the center covered with clear resin.

It is an `87 model, registrated nov.`86.
This car is in good originally shape.
We enjoy our 780 Coupe and drive it every day.
We receive a lot of compliments about the car.
The car is in perfect condition,
everything is orginal exeception the wheels they are 18 inch wheels from a Volvo C70.
Over 200,000 miles with no major problems.
No engine repairs of any sort.
However I'm having electrical problems regarding the fuse box and seats.
And of course the headliner is now sagging.
My car has the Automatic Climate Control option.
I have aftermarket wheels, but otherwise the car is totally original.
The V6 is very smooth and quiet. I am very happy with it,
though I'd like to try one with the independent suspension.
Fahrzeug ist aus Italien.
I am interested in any input as far as modifications that can be made to this car.
I would love to squeeze more horsepower from the 4 cyl. turbo and improve the handling characteristics.

A few minor problems with seat controls and burnt out bulb indicator other than that great european coupe.
Bought the car 99-05-01 with a blown b280e.
Now the power comes from a converted B23E to B23ET assembled by "turbo Karlsson" with IC komp 7.5:1, grpA garret with bigger kompr.
Very big valves and ports made by "Grottis" 3" exh and M90 gearbox.Jamex lowered and stiffened.
At 0.8 bar it delivers 300hp back there.

I'm not sure about engine...I know its a 4 cyl. turbo.
Also not sure about serial number...its raining outside right now.
Its my teenage son's car, but I've taken a real liking to it.
He wants to trade it for a pickup, but I may keep it.
I hope to find a front air dam and a few small parts to fix it up.
The only real problem is the driver's seat will not move forward/back, and it is stuck in a position that is too close for comfort on me!
My car is a beautiful Black with all Black interior. When we first
unloaded it off the truck the first thing we did was remove all the
suspension parts and put in all brand new IPD parts. We installed
new springs shocks, swaybars and we lowered the car alot. This is
very tricky because of the independent rear suspension. We actually
had IPD fabricate one of the parts to make the whole thing work.
Then we I had a brand new set of 16" 740/940 Turbo rims polished with
Goodyear GS-C 205/55/ZR16 tires. The wheels and tires make the whole
car it looks like it is motion even when it is standing still. I am
not kidding when I tell you I cried when I picked up the wheels they
were so perfect and exactly what I wanted. They make the car look
like it is wearing silver slippers. Not only that but the handling
is way beyond what any of us expected. The car is so low and stiff
that there is just no body roll at all, regardless of speed. We had
the three rear windows blacked out. I installed a new Volvo stereo
EQ which came standard with earlier model 780's (the 1991 came with a
6 disc CD player but no equalizer) The 1991 also came with a plate
on the dash that has Nuccio Bertone's signature.
And last but not least, I was able to get the California license plate
of "BERTONE". Someone else already had the plate so I hired a private
investigator to contact the person to see if they would sell it to me,
and they did. The private investigator cost me $75, all he did was
make a couple of phone calls. The plate cost me $125, the owner
didn't even have it registered on a car. It didn't even spell BERTONE
for him so he wasn't that attached to it. This guys name was David
Bertelson and the license plate said "BERT ONE" (he had a 1/2 space
between BERT and ONE) his brother had "BERT TWO" I can not tell you
how much I love having that license plate on this car.
I love this car more than any other car I have ever owned. It was
delivered to me with on 35 miles on it and I know have 93,000. I can
not imagine every getting rid of the car.
I also own a 1993 Blue Volvo 940 Turbo station wagon with 50,000
miles. I just bought it 2 months ago and I love it already, It is
replacing a 1983 245 Turbo Wagon.(Blue Volvo's are my favorite color)

my car is acting wierd. driver's seat is all crooked. i have no idea what the hell happened.

After 8 years driving a 780 with the V6 engine I decided that it was time for something different.
Although the V6 is a smooth car and it hadn't let me down once I was looking for a little bit more power.
I found this B204GT already 2 years ago by reading an article in "autovisie",
a dutch automagazine, where this car was subject to an article on the 780.
Owner was Carlo Schmidt but he was a little bit reluctant to sell the car at that time.
In the mid of 2008 we came to an agreement and we "swapped" our cars.

am the original owner of a 1991 Bertone Coupe (#11594).
As a former Vice President of Volvo North America Corp.,
this car was in the corporate showroom for one year, but I had the then VP Marketing for Cars, Bill Hoover, earmark it for me when it came off the showroom floor.
The car is a classic, in that it was one of two, that were painted with a test color at the time "Pearlescent White." Mitch Duncan, VP Parts at the time got the other one.
I have had the car ever since and still drive it daily (66,000 miles), what a wonderful machine "she" is!
The car is overloaded with accessories, all factory options including 17 x 145 Pirelli's mounted on low profile 5 spoke wheels. The workshop at VNAC, Rockleigh, NJ, fitted the 760 alarm & remote entry system to the car.
I could never fathom why for the Flagship Volvo didn't offer this as standard.
I will get the rest of the information on my vehicle, no paint code ID was ever found, we finally tracked it down via Sweden, Italy and then Switzerland! It's a 3 part finish and very classy.

The X in stead of an zero in the chassinumber is for me a mysterium.
Some people says it stands for experimental, made for Volvo's own purpose.
The car is registered for the first time in march 1989, but it is built already in august 1988.
Cars built in august 1988 should normaly be built as yearmodel 1989, and yearmodel 1989 had obligatory katalyst (B280F), which my car don't have.
Engine replaced in yr 2000 @ 281,000 miles.
61,000 currently on engine.

at Bertone in Italy, with special "Pearlescent White" paint, for "future model" introductions.

I truly belive this is THE ULTIMATE 780, with 17" rims factory fitted!
I have only had this car a few months and i really enjoy it.

I bought the car from an old retired guy 2 years ago.
The car only had 44000 miles when I got it!!I am having some minor problems w/ it.
Passenger side power seat works occasionally?? Power sunroof the same.
There must be an electrical problem - maybe a short.
Rear speakers need to be replaced - they have dry rotted and the power antenna stopped going up last month.
These are all minor complaints for a twelve year old car.
I just had the 60K service done and this baby runs like a champ.
I get a lot of people asking me about this car - it's kind of funny.
I have only seen 2 other ones like it on the road. I would love to hear from others who have one like it.

Just bought it from a used dealer. Original engine was replaced with 4cyl-Turbo from 740 model (180000km).
I am experiencing battery drain problem that others have described (have to boost every day),
as well as other electrical "quirks".
Beautiful car, but I'm hoping these electrical issues don't drive me crazy.
There is another 780 in my neighbourhood that just sits on the street in neglect - such a shame!
I am also looking for a Volvo repairman in Toronto if you know anybody.
Had one back in 1992, sold him unfortunately, got a 262ce, sold him also in 1998, now 2002-

Beautiful Coupe!! Showroom condition.
Purchased on 7-1-02 as my daily driver. Everything works (knock on wood!).
Also have access to spare car for parts.
Great car to drive. Good power and acceleration, great brakes and handling. Very comfortable seats.
Heating is excellent in our very cold (-40C) temeperatures. Good air conditioning for our hot days (+30C) of summer.
Major problems are rear shocks - Nivomat self levelling - where do I find replacements at a reasonable price (ie less than $200.00 Cdn)?
Have some trouble with radio, it doesn't keep preset station tunings.
Front drivers power seat is erratic and often does not work for adjustments.
Car is in A++ condition, having been stored since new in Georgia, USA. Absolutely no rust.

I recently acquired this car that was in a collision i am trying to locate two headlights two corner lamps a grill and other plastic trimmings in the front area of the car the front bumper is o.k but the section under the bumper needs changing.

I was browsing through EBay a few weeks ago and found a beautiful '89 780 Bertone Black/Beige with 91,000 miles,
two hours and 30 minutes later, when the auction ended, I was the higheset bidder.
I flew out to Chicago to pick it up a week later and it drove home to Beantown like a dream.
I love my car!!!!!
This car has just been imported into the UK.
It came from Michigan but little is known of its previous history.
At present it is in poor condition but it has been sent to the Volvo agent in Carlisle to be made roadworthy at least.
Do you have a record of any other 780s in the UK, please?

I got this car for christmas, it has 300,000 miles on it, and in very good condition.
I put some 16 inch alloy turbo wheels on it, and it looks pretty good.

If I have the correct production numbers, there were only 79 780's made after this one. It was first registered in May of 1992.
Alas, my beautiful 780, Sophia, gave her life for mine on November 29, 2006.
She had 207,000 miles and was in perfect condition until someone illegally passing hit me head on.
I just acquired this vehicle 9/20/03 and my first experience in a Volvo was to immediately drive this
one cross country 1640 miles from South Florida to Rochester, New York.
I was very pleased with its performance and ride comfort.
The only drawback for me is that it is very hard to get in and out of the car because
I cannot adjust the seat low enough for my 6'2" height and I have to keep the moon roof cover open to avoid hitting my head.

Was looking for a car for 17 year old daughter, found at a used car lot. Very good condition, air conditioner even works!
Currently reasearching "How To"'s, intention is to restore to OEM standards.
Parts are rare and expensive, but since I am a car guy, oh well.
Maybe I'll keep it and get another car for my daughter.
I love everything about it except the Novimasts and the automatic.
This car should be a manual. the engine is a little lethargic...any advice on performance upgrading for the V6 is welcome.

I race the car regularly. it does a 13 second quarter mile with full interior.
BTW i am over a mile above sea level so thats not bad for a heavy car.
The motor is b230ft bored.060 and milled hear .020 and an ipd cam with 18 lbs of boost. tons of other goodies. email 4 more info

5 years and 12,000 miles later... still very pleased with my Bertone.
Used internally within Volvo for the first 70000 kms. Later privately owned. US-version that stayed in Sweden.
I purchased the car in Virginia, sight unseen, w/a V6 I thought to repower with a V8.
Drove it and was amazed at how smooth and quiet it was.
Several other shops agree it is tight, only very minor leaks. No tears in leather.
Clean CarFax. Just sold to my son, keeping it in family.
Would love to keep it but the 122 project calls! May get another one someday.
Car was not driven in winters of 1988-1995. Usually kept in garage. Has serious leek from water pump and is not being driven.

It's a fantastic car...but with a lot of small problems...
Car still needs a bit of love as the drivers seat doesn't move and the last owner was short and I'm tall.
But other than that this is the greatest car I have ever owned.
It took me 3 months to find and I had to drive 90 miles to get it but it was worth it!
The auto is almost perfect I have a well three problems with it someone cracked the driver side rear stop light.
It will sometimes drop in to over drive and will not come out for a while and when I punch
it it will bog around 80 if I take it slower it will run up to 115-125 easy any ideas.

Yes: like almost every single other 780 ive ever seen- the front underspoiler is dammaged,
The dash is cracked in front of the passenger seat, and the stiching hase come un-done on the drivers seat bottom (but re-sewable)
The accident dammage is limited to: dented front passenger side fender, and drivers side rear quaterpannel, dented in, under the gas filler.
First paint. Almost perfect and original car. Delivered first in USA and came to the netherlands in 1990. Dutch license plates.
This was a turbo car. I have put a modified 5.0 HO from a Mustang Cobra in it with a 5 spd trans. and a 100 HP nitrious setup.
It is in process and when finished it will be blue met in color. The interior will be Grey and black

I have 2 88 Bertones.One is unfortunately a parts donor.
The other just received a fresh motor,new tires,rotors,calipers,pads on the corners.
There a few blemishes here and there but no rust.Overall she's a beauty.
I am in the process of repairing/restoring this vehicle.
Engine has been rebuilt and I will be repairing paint....spots worn due to south Texas sun.
Interior in good condition, other than a minor exhaust problem, runs well, if a little rich right now because of hole in exhaust.
Enjoy the car's uniqueness and comfort; parts not too difficult to get;
reliable smooth engine but not enough power - intend to look into installing a Ford Mustang V8 which a specialist in New Hampshire has apparently done

The looks from Bertone and the Quality from Volvo. Nice engine with enough torque and nice V6 sound. Thirsty engine and build in weak interieur inside doorpanals.
My fourth, I now have an 87 in restoration, an 88 getting another B280F, an 88 B230FT, and now a 90 B230FT+.
All are wonderful and different! Need to get a registry badge for the 90.

This car is in pristine condition - really only 75 miles in 20 years. It is my daily driver.
A wonderful car to own and drive.
Gets a lot of looks as to no one knows what it is when it goes down the road :)
This car is recently imported to Denmark from Sweden.
It has been restored due to rust in roof. It is in real fine condition.
Engine and tranny is running smoothly as well as the interior is pretty fine too.
All electrical equipment works fine (pwr seats, moon roof, A/C, ABS, pwr windows, pwr mirrors, cruise control, etc.).
Only 13 were sold in Denmark (due to excessive car taxation in DK, the price was astronomic).
Since I was 17 I wanted one. I've been told that 8 (eight) 780's are living in DK by now.
Guess mine will be the ninth, when I get my licence plates.
It is a real comfy cruiser and I'm in love with it, -despite the 15 liters pr. 100 km fuel economy...

Purchased from ID#-530 6/09. Longtime multiple Volvo owner, 1st 780. Starting to enjoy this Bertone.
Been working on it quite a bit. It's original, all there(except for console plaque), & fully operational.
Great car & serves as my daily driver.
The car runs well, but the fuel gage is always 3/4 full.
10 years later... the 780 is not my daily transport...
My Bertone is still running strong and a delight to drive...
I have yet to find a more comfortable driver's seat. JRF

I picked this Bertone up in Bellingham MA. It had been sitting 3 years. Changed one of the tires blew up the other 2.
Drained all the stale gas and Drove it home (three hundred miles almost).

I am the former owner of 780 chassi no 1707 (210 in the members list).
Car was purchased in March of this year (2012), in very neglected condition. I have been working on it for about 4-5 weeks.
My goal for this car is to keep it all Volvo, just better, faster, stronger. No modifications will be done that alter original aspects of car.
With the exception of replacing leather and plastic interior parts for interior improvements. No \"harm\" will be done. Only improvements.
The car will recieve re-built \'93 squiter-block, 19T turbo upgrade, \'95 AW-71 trans. w/ Hi-Stall converter.
Other mods will follow as staged.

that it was one of about 500 780's officially imported to Japan. It would appear to
be a special edition promoting Diners Club! The car is in great shape has been well
cared for and is being UK registered. It resides in the North West of England.
